Newhall County Water District Director B.J. Atkins is a long time Santa Clarita Valley resident and professional environmental consultant. He has dedicated over 30 years of his professional life to protecting water resources and our environment. Under B.J. Atkins' leadership, the district has held polluters accountable, created efficiencies helping to reduce operating costs and is moving forward to implement water recycling. B.J. Atkins' Record: Successful in avoiding water rate increases even though electricity costs have begun to skyrocket. Rates have increased only once in four years totaling an increase of less than $5 per month on the average bill; Provided oversight and guidance through the doubling of reserves to 60% of the goal ($3 million when elected; over $6 million in reserves today); The number of connections served by the District has increased by nearly 25% but through better efficiency and use of technology staff has dropped nearly 6%; NCWD received over $3 million from the polluters of the Whitaker-Bermite site. The lawsuit also guarantees to replace water (wells) lost to perchlorate contamination and reimbursement of operating costs for 20-30 years (or longer) while treatment of groundwater continues. |
